Tom and Ajani find first love in their lackluster hometown in the Netherlands, and a move to the bustling cityscape of Amsterdam feels like the natural next step for two burgeoning queer filmmakers. But as Ajani gets drawn into the intoxicating urban gay scene, Tom finds himself unable to fit in and adrift from the anchor of his first love. Through cleanly crafted black and white cinematography, Out explores the gray space that is sexuality, identity, and societal expectations. Director Dennis Alink utilizes his extensive documentary film background to construct a tender and searing portrait of youth and asks the question "what if coming out doesn’t make you feel any less of an outsider?
